Summary
Dietary guidance in many countries includes the promotion of regular consumption of fish based mainly on evidence of an inverse association with coronary heart disease (CHD) risk observed in Western populations. The association of fish consumption with CHD in different populations is not well quantified, and there is evidence that fish consumption may be related positively with type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk in some geographic world regions. We are interested in exploring mechanisms that will help explain the different associations for CHD and T2D. This work will include multi-platform analyses of diets, nutritional biomarkers, metabolomics and genetics; and longitudinal analysis of risks of T2D and CHD to investigate associations, pathways and mechanisms to disease.
