Permission to Work Away
Students need to apply for Leave to Work Away via their self-service account. You should read and follow the required process which is described on the University of Cambridge Students webpages. The recommendation is to start this process 2 – 3 months in advance of traveling.
The process requires that a risk assessment is completed and that travel insurance (see below) is in place. Detailed advice and generic risk assessment templates can be found on the University Safety Office website. The risk assessment should be approved by the Head of Department. You must not start a period of working away without formal email approval from the Student Registry.
Travel insurance
You need to complete the graduate student process to apply for travel insurance which is provided through the University. During the process you will be asked to provide the following information:
- Your Department (i.e. MRC Epidemiology Unit)
- Your University Student number (find this via Self Service number of CAMSIS)
- The countries to be visited
- The dates of your journey
- The purpose of your journey
- Confirmation of good health and that where you have a medical condition your doctor has agreed to the trip.
- Confirmation that you are in compliance with the Board of Graduate Studies procedures for Working Away from Cambridge
Visa requirements
The International Students Office at the University of the Witwatersrand can provide advice on visa requirements. The name of Gita Patel has been provided as a contact.
We have been advised that Canadian and Finnish passport holders are not required to apply for visas to enter the Republic of South Africa as the intended stay is for less than 90 days. They will obtain a port of entry stamp at immigration. They should be issued letters outlining the purpose of their visit and stay. [NB: Rebecca will liaise with Shane to get these letters]
Registering as a visiting student in the University of the Witwatersrand
You be registered as a visiting student at the University of Witwatersrand. This step can be completed as soon as your application form is complete and the dates of your visit are agreed.
You will be issued with a completed student visitor letter which you will be asked to sign to say that you agree to the terms set out in the letter and the standard terms and conditions.
[NB: We need to find out who at Wits will issue this – Rebecca will find out]
