The aim of the Propels study was to find sustainable ways to increase physical activity among people who are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the future, in order to reduce this risk.
We recruited 1,368 individuals adults at high risk of type 2 diabetes and randomly assigned them to one of three different physical activity promotion strategies. We then followed them up for 4 years to see what impact this had on their risk of type 2 diabetes.
The PROPELS study was set up by the Universities of Leicester and Cambridge and is funded by the NIHR Health Technology Assessment programme. The results will inform the recommendations of policymakers concerning physical activity promotion and diabetes prevention strategies in primary care.
