Written in Microsoft Access, DINO is an integrated dietary data entry and nutritional analysis system (1). It was developed by MRC Human Nutrition Research in 2004 and has been used in dietary assessment from small-scale intervention studies to national surveys in the UK.
DINO is divided into two database platforms: the dietary data-entry interface and food composition tables, which enable both entry of dietary assessment data (records/recalls) and nutrient analysis for calculation of nutrient intakes. DINO contains around 6,000 foods with specific portion sizes assigned to every food. Food composition data for a core of fifty-three nutrients are available for each food item and are mainly derived from McCance and Widdowson`s The Composition of Foods (2) and the UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey`s Nutrient Databank (3). Disaggregated data are available for fruit, vegetables, meat, fish and cheese in composite foods, enabling greater accuracy when reporting food consumption or assessing adherence to dietary recommendations (4).
DINO was used for the coding and calculation of nutrient intakes for the first 11 years of the UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey Rolling Programme (2008- 2019). The DINO software 2019 version is being made freely available for research use, supplied at the point in time (2019) at which DINO ceased to be used for the coding of dietary intake by NDNS. The survey has now moved to Intake24 to collect and code dietary intake.
A Gambian version of DINO is also available.
