Ph.D. Student
Physical Activity Epidemiology
Left the Unit in 2018
Work and interests
Tom was a PhD student in the Physical Activity Epidemiology programme, supervised by Dr Soren Brage, who was awarded his PhD in December 2018. His research was primarily methodological and focuses on the interpretation of free-living waveform acceleration data. His projects included using deep learning to infer activity energy expenditure from wrist acceleration signals, and exploring how the resulting models can be repurposed for activity recognition.
Background and experience
Tom holds an undergraduate degree in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science, and a master’s degree in Advanced Computer Science, both from the University of Birmingham. Prior to beginning his research as a PhD student, he worked as a Data Scientist in the Unit.
