Visiting Scientist
Aetiology and Mechanisms of Diabetes and Related Metabolic Disorders of Later Life
Current work and interests
As a biomathematician by training Maik is working on the computational and knowledge-based integration of large-scale OMICs data sets, e.g. genomics, proteomics or metabolomics, from population-based studies to identify mechanisms causing metabolic diseases, in particular type 2 diabetes.
Background and experience
After obtaining his PhD working on metabolomics in endocrine diseases at the University of Greifswald, Germany, in 2017, Maik initially joined the Unit for one year as a visiting scientist funded by the German Research Foundation. Since then he has greatly broadened his research experience, applying metabolomics to various clinical traits, risk factors and analytical questions, with a particular focus on the use of machine learning techniques to identify core patterns in high-dimensional settings. Maik was a Senior Research Associate with the Aetiology and Mechanisms Programme before becoming a visiting scientist when he left the Unit in 2022.
