It is with great sadness that we share the news that Dr Eva Maguire, a former PhD student at CEDAR, has died.

Eva joined us in 2011 having completed an undergraduate degree in Politics and Philosophy in Sheffield followed by a Masters in Social and Spatial Inequalities. We awarded her an integrated Masters and PhD fellowship through CEDAR because of her obvious promise. She lived up to that expectation and after completing our Masters in Public Health, she went on to do an excellent PhD under the supervision of Pablo Monsivais, which focused on social inequities in diet and health.

Eva was a terrific PhD student, authoring several highly-cited publications, and gaining awards and recognition for her scientific presentations at the Society for Social Medicine and the American Society of Nutrition. Since leaving the Unit she kept in touch and last autumn gave an excellent careers talk to our PhD students and post-docs.

Social justice was a passionate cause for Eva. She worked in a woman’s hostel in Sri Lanka, she often took part in fundraising activities, and her research at Sheffield and Cambridge focused on understanding and alleviating inequality in the UK. Since leaving CEDAR, she worked at the Civil Service within the homelessness unit of the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, and then as part of the Ministry of Justice social research team investigating the impacts of recent reforms to the Criminal Justice system.

Eva had many friends within the CEDAR and MRC Epidemiology Unit community, and we are very proud of her achievements both here and in her professional life.

We remember her kindness, generosity, humour and keen intellect. She will be deeply missed.
