Career Development Fellow
Physical Activity Epidemiology

Work and interests
Youngwon Kim joined the Physical Activity Epidemiology programme in 2015 as a career development fellow. His main research interest lies in improving the accuracy and utility of various types of subjective and objective measurement tools designed to assess sedentary behavior, physical activity and energy expenditure in both youth and adult populations. He has also been interested in examining associations of sedentary behavior and physical activity with health outcomes (including obesity), and in understanding the differences in identified health relationships when using subjective versus objective measurement tools. Youngwon left the Unit in June 2017.
His main role as a career development fellow in the MRC unit is to analyze the UK Biobank data, which is a large UK national cohort on 500,000 people ages 40-69 yrs. Specifically, he has examined the relationships of fitness with various adverse health outcomes as well as objectively measured physical activity.
Background and experience
Youngwon received his doctoral degree in Kinesiology, and minor in Statistics from Iowa State University, under the supervision of Dr. Gregory Welk, who leads the Physical Activity and Health Promotion Research Group. He completed his master’s degree in Exercise Science at University of South Carolina, under Dr. Michael Beets’ supervision.
