Moffat Nyirenda is a Diabetologist/Endocrinologist and Professor of Medicine (Global Non-Communicable Diseases) at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), and leads the non-communicable disease (NCD) research theme at MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit.

His previous positions include MRC Clinician Scientist/honorary physician (University of Edinburgh), Professor of Research and Associate Director of Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Programme (College of Medicine, University of Malawi) and Director of Malawi Epidemiology and Intervention Research Unit. Moffat’s research interests lie in mechanistic understanding of the aetiology of NCDs, including:

1. Investigating the association between early environmental insults and the risk of diabetes and hypertension in adulthood
2. Using cross-cutting approaches to examine the interactions between infection and NCDs
3. Designing and evaluating interventions to improve NCD care in Africa

He serves on a number of committees, including Wellcome Trust International Interview Committee, MRC African Research Leader Selection Panel, NIHR Independent Scientific Advisory Group, Awards Assessment Panel for Africa Research Excellence (AREF), WHO Working Group on integration of NCDs in other programmatic areas, and is member of the Non-Communicable Disease Technical Advisory Committee to Uganda Minister of Health.
