William H. Herman, MD, MPH is the Stefan S. Fajans/GlaxoSmithKline Professor of Diabetes, Professor of Internal Medicine in the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology, and Diabetes, and Professor of Epidemiology in the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan.
Formerly, he served as both director of the NIH-funded Michigan Diabetes Research and Training Center (2000-2011) and as founding director of the Michigan Center for Diabetes Translational Research (2011-2021). He currently serves as a Medical Director for Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan.
Professor Herman is an internationally recognized clinician and researcher in diabetes. His clinical interests focus on the prevention and management of diabetes, its complications, and comorbidities. His research focuses on the broad areas of clinical trials, epidemiology, health services research, clinical economics, and health policy. Professor Herman has served as a principal investigator for the NIH-funded Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT), Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), and Glycemia Reduction Approaches for Diabetes: A Comparative Effectiveness Study (GRADE). In 2006, he received the American Diabetes Association’s Kelly West Award for outstanding achievement in epidemiology.
From 2018 to 2021, he chaired the National Clinical Care Commission, a federal advisory panel charged with making recommendations to the Congress on the prevention and treatment of diabetes in the United States. Currently, he serves as chair of the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) Workgroup on Diabetes Quality Measures.
