HISTORY

The Cambridge Diabetes Seminars (CDS) were established in 1981 to provide training in epidemiological methods with specific application to diabetes mellitus. The format of the Seminar is a week long residential course, with resident international Faculty and up to 50 participants from all over the world.

Since the first seminar, a further thirteen courses have been held in Cambridge, the latest in 2019 which was attended by 41 participants from 26 different countries. In 2010, the Cambridge Seminar was held in China

Many of the participants have begun original research and made substantial contributions to this field on returning to their countries of origin. Not only does the course provide didactic training to those new to the field, but it acts as an important point of connection to a growing network of researchers.

AIMS

• To provide a globally accessible introduction to the epidemiological and public health aspects of diabetes mellitus.
• The Cambridge Seminar has been central to many developments around research capacity and research outputs including in countries where such capacity is currently very limited.
• To provide an opportunity for participants from a range of backgrounds including clinical, research and public health, to engage in discussion, debate and collaboration on prominent issues in diabetes epidemiology.
• To promote a culture of learning and discussion using a mixture of lectures, debates, and small group discussion with an expert international Faculty that is resident at the Seminar, together with invited guest lecturers.
• Participants will give presentations about their ongoing research and will receive helpful comments and advice for improvement of their research from both their peers and the expert Faculty in a friendly atmosphere.
• To create opportunities for socialising and networking among the participants and the Faculty in an informal setting.

The Seminar will take place at Clare College, Cambridge from the afternoon of Sunday 18th to Saturday 24th August 2024, with departure that morning. There is no registration fee or attendance fee. Those accepted on the course will be provided with full board single accommodation at Clare College, Cambridge during the Seminar, but will be expected to fund their own travel to and from Cambridge.
