We have developed a growing global network that enables existing data to be used more easily in cross-cohort analyses to understand population differences in the risk of diabetes and obesity. This process has been demonstrated in a number of research projects and continues on current projects.
These research projects have led to the development a range of approaches that allow the quickest route to data access and results sharing. Cohorts are brought together to form ad hoc consortia around the research questions that they wish to participate in:
Each ad hoc consortium is autonomous with transparent processes to review research proposals. Individual cohorts retain control of their data and actively decide for themselves whether or not to participate in each research question. The decision whether or not to participate may be influenced by scientific interest, whether the cohort has relevant data and local ELSI considerations.
