Current work and interests

Tony joined the MRC Epidemiology Unit in April 2021 as the Senior Data Manager and team leader of the Data Management team.

Background and experience

Tony has been working with data and databases for over 30 years in a number of roles, from his first job as a lab assistant at Guy’s Hospital to his current role at the Unit. He has worked as a developer, database administrator (DBA), database architect and as a technical team leader in both academia and in industry. He has a BSc in Genetics from Swansea University (Prifysgol Abertawe) and a MSc in Computer Science from Birkbeck, University of London.

As Principal DBA at The Welcome Trust Sanger Institute he designed and implemented a number of bespoke database systems including a ½ petabyte sequencing database (which in its day was one of the largest databases in the world) along with a number of systems for the Sanger Cancer Team e.g. COSMIC.
